About 2 1/2 months after he crossed the 101 Freeway for the first time, a young male mountain lion has successfully ventured over those 10 lanes of divided pavement a second time. The lion, known as P-55, is believed to have crossed the 101 Freeway last week, according to the National Park Service, which has been studying local cougars for 15 years.

UC Berkeley police received a report of a four-legged prowler on the university campus. A university employee spotted the mountain lion around 11 a.m. on Sept. 16 in some bushes near the intersection of Centennial Drive and Rim Way near the school's rugby field, police said on Friday Mountain lion sightings have occurred in recent years in the hills above the campus. Police: Santa Rosa driver possibly hit mountain lion
A hunt for a possibly injured mountain lion was launched by police Wednesday night in Santa Rosa after a driver reported hitting the big cat with a car, police said. Officers went to Montecito Meadow Drive and Chanate Road about 9:30 p.m. after a driver reported hitting what may have been a mountain lion. The officers searched the area but did not find the animal, authorities said. In a separate incident about 2:30 a.m. Wednesday, officers failed to find a mountain lion following reports of one spotted less than a mile away at Fountain Grove Parkway and Chanate Road, police said.

Palo Alto police kept up the search Thursday for an adult mountain lion and a cub spotted before dawn in a residential neighborhood of the city. Police were called to the 1700 block of Webster Street at 6:20 a.m., shortly after a couple in a home on the street heard their Australian shepherds barking loudly and aggressively in the backyard followed by a deep growl from an animal they didn't recognize, said Sgt. Brian Philip, a Palo Alto police spokesman. They called their next-door neighbor, who has experience with wildlife conservancy. The neighbor searched the backyard and saw what he thought was an adult mountain lion and a cub in a 300-foot redwood tree behind the couple's house.
